Finishing of cutting tools using selective material ablation

Abstract
A new laser-based technology for finishing of cutting tools regarding the preparation of the cutting edge has been investigated. Pre-machined edges have been rounded using selective material ablation. By using short VIS- and UV-laser pulses emitted by diode-pumped solid-state lasers, the thermal impact on the machined area and surrounding material can be minimized. Compared to conventional processes like brushing or micro-blasting, similar or even better surface quality with a defined edge geometry has been achieved. Additionally, a six-axis precision positioning system has been set up to machine nearly every cutting tool geometry with only minor limitations regarding the angle of irradiation. The integrated measurement system and digital image processing is used for 3-D tool path generation and process control.
