From 4 to 7 May 2026, scientists from LZH participated in the Space Resources Week in Luxembourg alongside colleagues from the Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (ILR) at TU Berlin. Using a poster presentation, they showcased the latest results from the MOONRISE project, which is developing a laser-based process for melting lunar regolith. The presentation covered the current status of flight hardware development, melt process development, and AI development.

The Space Resources Week in Luxembourg is a key gathering point for researchers, industry representatives, and space agencies working on the utilisation of extraterrestrial resources. For the LZH scientists, the conference provided an opportunity to present their work to an international expert audience and to network with other players in the field.

At the heart of the MOONRISE project is the question of how lunar regolith can be selectively melted using a laser and processed into solid structures. In the future, this approach could enable the construction of landing pads and roads directly on-site from materials already available on the Moon — eliminating the need for costly material transport from Earth.
