The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is one of the leading institutions in the field of applied laser research. With about 250 employees, basic research, applied research and industrial developments are realized. The Optical Coatings Group of the Optical Components department is looking for a person to start as soon as possible in the following position:
Research associate (m/f/d) in the field of optical coatings for the UV spectral area
Specialization in physics, optical technologies, nanotechnology or comparable (Master)
(Job ID: 71929)
The development and manufacturing of optical functional layers and the appropriate characterization processes is a current field of research in photonics, which extends the limits of currently feasible optical systems and opens up new applications. The Optical Coatings Group (OSC) researches and develops coating systems, the necessary manufacturing processes, the materials used and specialized characterization methods to manufacture high-performance optical components. As a research associate, you will work independently on a research project for the development and production of optical components for use in a free electron laser in the VUV spectral range. To this end, you will work with various coating processes such as thermal evaporation, ion beam sputtering and atomic layer deposition and specialized characterization methods such as spectrophotometry in the UV-visible and IR range, scattered light, and laser-based absorption measurements. The central challenge here is the identification and integration of suitable materials that guarantee sufficient performance in the optical structure of the electron laser and at the same time offer a high degree of stability under extreme environmental conditions.
The focus of your work is on:
- Manufacturing of optical coatings using various coating processes and operation of the associated system and vacuum technology
- Characterization of optical components using commercial and specialized measurement methods
- Optimization of process parameters based on own results and requirements in the research project
- Examination of optical components after irradiation in an electron laser and research into degradation mechanisms
- Independent organization of their experimental work and communication with project partners
- Presentation of the results at scientific conferences
Environment:
The work in the research group at the LZH offers you an extraordinary environment and the best conditions for a doctorate. We offer:
- A highly motivated, interdisciplinary team in a cooperative working environment
- Independent work in an innovative organization
- Varied and exciting tasks
- Insight and involvement in current research topics in optical coating technology
- Direct proximity to national and international industry and research partners
- Company pension scheme
Hiring requirements:
- A degree (diploma/master's) with above-average performance in the field of natural sciences or engineering
- Ideally experience with optical measurement methods, vacuum technology, and solid-state physics (lateral entry is possible)
- Practical experience with experimental and scientific work
- Further practical experience in the field of optics and photonics is advantageous
- Programming skills (Python, LabView, etc.) are advantageous
- Desire for independent practical and experimental work
- Good written and spoken English skills
- Sense of responsibility, goal orientation and reliability
Temporary employment in accordance with the "Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz" (German Act on Temporary Scientific Contracts) and remuneration based on the collective agreement for the public service of the states, depending on qualifications and activities up to TV-L ¾ E13. The possibility of a doctorate is given.
Severely disabled persons are given preference in the case of equal suitability.
The LZH attaches great importance to professional gender equality.
