While lasers are common and valuable tools in industrial applications, laser technology in the agrifood sector has only just started to get exploited. The reduction of pesticide use is one of the most pressing current issues in plant production and laser weeding could play a significant role in the fundamental changes expected in agriculture. We explore this innovative kind of laser processing in several research projects dealing with both technical and agricultural aspects. Mobile application of laser technology on agricultural fields has to cope with quite different conditions compared to a laboratory or industrial environment. We will present this laser process with a focus on the technical challenges.
