Challenges of Processing Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys by Selective Laser Melting

Abstract
Since 2009 Selective Laser Melting (SLM) of magnesium and magnesium alloys is in the focus of several research groups. Recent efforts proved the feasibility by manufacturing sample parts reaching a density of >~99~\%. Also first mechanical properties and the resulting microstructure were determined. However, the process development can be regarded as not completed yet, since the producibility of parts is still limited. The major challenge of processing magnesium is related to the fast formation of a ductile oxide layer. The use of special magnesium alloys is promoting the processability of magnesium, since the resulting density is increased and particle adhesion minimized. This contribution describes the process effects being responsible for the processablity of magnesium and explains how magnesium alloys can improve the processablity. Also challenges for integrating magnesium in an industrial manufacturing process including safety issues are given and ways to overcome these are proposed.
