Job

The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is one of the leading institutions in the field of applied laser research. With about 250 employees, basic research, applied research and industrial developments are realized. The Solid-State Lasers group of the Laser Development department is looking for a person to start as soon as possible in the following position:

Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of single-frequency fibre amplifiers for gravitational wave detectors
Specialization in physics, optical technologies, laser technology or comparable (Master)
(Job ID: 71587)

The Solid-State Lasers group is working on the development of novel, single-frequency high-power laser sources for use in interferometric gravitational wave detectors or also in optical communication. Within the scope of this work, new single-frequency fibre amplifier systems in the wavelength range of around 2µm are to be conceptualised and developed for the next generation of gravitational wave detectors. In particular, both Tm-doped and Hm-Tm-codoped fibres will be tested for their respective suitability. In parallel, the dynamic behaviour of the fibre amplifier systems will also be investigated and understood.

The focus of your work is on:

  • Familiarization into existing fibre amplifier technologies for the wavelength range around 2µm
  • Experimental investigations on the power scaling of single-frequency fibre amplifiers
  • Characterisation of the realised systems, especially with respect to beam quality, power stability and frequency stability
  • Investigations on (undesired) non-linear effects
  • Carrying out analytical calculations, numerical simulations and experimental investigations on the dynamic behaviour of the amplifier systems
  • Independent organisation of your experimental work
  • Presentation of results at scientific conferences

Environment:
The work in the research group at the LZH offers you an extraordinary environment and the best conditions for a doctorate. We offer:

  • An interdisciplinary team consisting of physicists and engineers
  • Close collaboration with various industry and research partners, especially integration into the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers
  • Job requirements:
  • A degree (Master) with above-average academic performance in the field of physics, optical technologies, laser technology or equivalent
  • Ideally experience in working with fibre-based laser and amplifier systems
  • Further (practical) experience in the fields of optics & photonics and/or numerical simulations is an advantage
  • Desire for practical work in the laboratory combined with data evaluation and simulations on the computer
  • Willingness to independently familiarise yourself with new topics and to continuously discuss and question your results
  • Good English skills
  • Structured, responsible and goal-oriented working style
  • Pleasure in contributing independently and productively to the team

Temporary employment in accordance with the "Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz" (German Act on Temporary Scientific Contracts) and remuneration based on the collective agreement for the public service of the states, depending on qualifications and activities up to TV-L ¾ E13. The possibility of a doctorate is given.
Severely disabled persons are given preference in the case of equal suitability.
The LZH attaches great importance to professional gender equality.
