Already in 2008, research institutions from Hannover founded the Lower Saxony Centre for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development (NIFE) as a joint scientific institution. The Hannover Medical School (MHH), the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation (TiHo), the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) and the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) partnered in order to focus their interdisciplinary competencies and cooperations in the field of biomedical research and development.

At that time, the partners were spread across eight locations in the region of Hannover. One of the aims was to direct the international focus to a central contact point for implant research in Lower Saxony. The construction works for the jointly planned research building in the Medical Park were finished at the end of 2015.

Now, the first scientists have moved to the new NIFE building. Among them are LZH employees from the Biomedical Optics and Nanotechnology Departments, too. Taking up their research works in the new laboratories, the scientists benefit from totally new opportunities for the cooperation with their partners. The geographical proximity to the other researchers and the resulting synergies shall guarantee an optimum and efficient development of innovative implants in the future.
