With the topic "Laser use for neurosurgery and biofabrication" this year's LaserForum on November 3 at Hanover, Germany, provided an opportunity for laser experts, device manufacturers and medical professionals to get together. The mixture of lectures from all three areas provided a good overview of the use of lasers in medical research and diagnostics and led to lively discussions in the plenum and in networking breaks.

Among others, Dr. Arnold Gillner from the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT reported on approaches to the manufacturing of artificial organs with lasers based on patient-specific body cells. Professor Hans Christoph Ludwig of the Department of Neurosurgery of the Göttingen University Medical Faculty explained the possibilities of brain surgery using lasers. Dr. Holger Lubatschowski, managing director of ROWIAK GmbH, talked about ways to treat disorders of the eye like cataracts by laser surgery.

The conference took place at the NIFE (Lower Saxony Centre for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development). In the NIFE center teams from the fields of medicine, biotechnology and laser research are working together on interdisciplinary projects.

The LaserForum is organized once a year by the IVAM Microtechnology Network in cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. and the Chair of Applied Laser Technologies (LAT) at Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB).
