Job

The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is a leading institute in the field of applied laser research. Approximately 250 employees carry out basic and applied research and develop solutions for industry. The Optics Integration Group of our Optical Components Department invites applications for a

Student (m/w/d) for a master’s thesis in the field of simulations of optical thin film systems
Physics, optical technologies, or similar

The Optics Integration Group researches and develops components, processes and systems for photonic assembly and packaging technology to build integrated optical systems. As part of your thesis, you will examine the coupling efficiencies of optical thin-film filter elements in various waveguide configurations. To this end, you will independently create simulations using a finite-difference time-domain (FTDT) software package and compare your simulation results with alternative solution approaches using suitable simplifications and experimental measurements.

Main tasks:

  • Creation of optical simulations using open-source FTDT software (MEEP) in Python
  • Comparison of the simulation results with alternative solution approaches using suitable simplifications
  • Independent organization of the programming work
  • Appraise the results based on given measurement data from our current research

Working environment:

At the LZH you will find an attract working environment in the research group optics integration. We offer:

  • An interdisciplinary team of physicists, engineers, and specialists
  • Cooperation on current research
  • A close cooperation with various partners from industry and research as well as the Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD (Photonics, Optics, and Engineering – Innovation across Disciplines)
  • Computing cluster for carrying out the simulations.

Job requirements:

  • A completed bachelor’s degree or equivalent (physics, optical technologies, or similar)
  • A basic understanding of programming, preferably in python
  • Experience with optics or optical systems is advantageous.
  • An interest in theoretical work and simulations
  • A sense of responsibility and reliability
  • Creativity and team spirit

Start Date:

  • As soon as possible

Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification will be given particular consideration.
The LZH emphasizes gender equality.
