Job

The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is a leading institute in the field of applied laser research. Approximately 250 employees carry out basic and applied research and develop solutions for industry. The Fiber Optics Group of our Laser Development Department invites applications for a

Student for a bachelor, project or master thesis on process development for optical fiber component manufacturing
in the field of physics, mechanical engineering, optical technologies or similar
(Job-ID: 71719)

The Fiber Optics Group at the LZH conducts research on the development of innovative optical components for fiber lasers and amplifiers with a focus on specialty fibers and high-power applications with excellent beam quality. The research area includes the design and (laser-)based fabrication of the components, as well as the integration of these into high-power laser systems. In an on-going project we are investigating the manufacturing of fiber components such as fiber-based signal-pump combiners for novel 2 µm wavelength laser sources. In your work you will develop a machining to generate innovative fiber geometries that will provide the basis for full integration of monolithic fiber lasers. The work can be combined with a project, bachelor or master thesis.

Main tasks:

  • Experimental work on CO2-laser induced machining of fibers
  • Investigating the laser-glass-interactions during laser-induced ablation
  • Preparation of required fibers for component manufacturing
  • Characterization of manufactured components

Working environment:
Working in the research group at the LZH offers you an extraordinary environment and best conditions. We offer:

  • An interdisciplinary team consisting of physicists and engineers
  • Participation in ongoing research
  • Supervision and technical assistance on your thesis
  • Support to promote your individual strengths and to develop core competencies

Job requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a technical / scientific degree program (physics, optical technologies, mechanical engineering or similar)
  • Knowledge of optics / laser technology are advantageous
  • Experiences with experimental and scientific work
  • Responsibility, reliable and independent working
  • Good proficiency in either English or German

Starting date: Flexible.

Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification will be given particular consideration.

The LZH emphasizes gender equality.
