The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is one of the leading institutions in the field of applied laser research. With approximately 250 employees, basic research, applied research and industrial developments are realised. The Photonic Materials Group of the Optical Components Department is looking to recruit, at the earliest possible date, a
Research associate (m/f/d) for the development of functional thin-film materials
using molecular beam epitaxy
Field of specialization: Physics, optical technologies, nanotechnology or comparable
(Job-ID: 73297)
As part of the PhoenixD Cluster of Excellence, the Photonic Materials Group conducts research on functional thin-film materials using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for optical and photonic quantum applications. The goal of the project is to develop novel thin-film platforms for next-generation integrated photonic systems. Your work focuses on the development and optimization of MBE growth processes to synthesize high-quality, nonlinear, and electro-optical thin-film systems and analyze their structural, optical, and materials-physical characteristics. It is carried out in close collaboration with partners in the fields of integrated photonics, quantum technologies, and solid-state physics. You will be working in the research environment of the PhoenixD Cluster of Excellence, which brings together innovative research across the entire photonic value chain. In addition, you will benefit from the extensive processing and characterization capabilities of the LZH and its partner institutes, including state-of-the-art thin-film and nanostructuring techniques as well as a wide range of material- and photonics-oriented analytical methods.
This position offers you the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge research topic at the intersection of materials physics, thin-film technology, and integrated photonics, as well as the chance to actively help shape future photonic and quantum technology platforms within a highly interdisciplinary research environment.
The work focuses on:
- Development and fabrication of nonlinear optical thin films using MBE techniques, as well as operation of associated equipment and vacuum systems
- Characterization of the fabricated films using commercial and specialized measurement techniques
- Optimization of process parameters based on your own results and the requirements of the research project
- Independent organization of your work and communication with project partners
- Supervising and guiding research assistants and student projects
- Presenting results at academic conferences
Work environment:
The work in the research group at the LZH offers you an extraordinary environment and the best conditions for a doctorate. We offer:
- A highly motivated, interdisciplinary team in a cooperative working environment
- Independent work in an innovative organization
- Versatile and exciting tasks
- Insight into and involvement in current research topics in optics and photonics, as well as the work being conducted within the PhoenixD Cluster of Excellence
- Assistance with the preparation of academic publications
- Close proximity to national and international industry and research partners
- Company pension scheme
Requirements:
- A completed degree (Master’s) in optics with above-average grades in science or engineering
- Hands-on experience in optical coating, particularly molecular beam epitaxy
- Ideally, experience with optical measurement techniques, vacuum technology, and solid-state physics (Career changers are welcome)
- Additional (practical) experience in the field of optics and photonics is advantageous
- Ideally, programming skills (e.g., Python, C++, LabVIEW, or similar)
- Experience with experimental and scientific work
- Knowledge of working in a cleanroom
- Enthusiasm for independent practical and experimental work
- Good written and spoken English skills
- Sense of responsibility, goal-oriented, and reliable
Temporary employment in accordance with the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz and remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states depending on qualifications and activities up to TV-L ¾ E13. The possibility of a doctorate is given.
People with severe disabilities are given preference if they are equally qualified.
