Abstract
For engineering of fully functional, tissue complex three-dimensional compositions of living cells and biomaterials need to be generated. Even before printed tissues and organs can be implanted in patients, there are several possible applications for printed cell structures in research. Conventional cell studies in Petri dishes (in vitro) are not suitable for simulating the complex interactions in three-dimensional tissues and in cell microenvironments like those in the body (in vivo). Cells react fundamentally different in 3D. Printed 3D cell patterns can fill the gap between conventional cell cultures in vitro and animal models in vivo.
The laser-induced forward transfer is one of the techniques applied for tissue printing, combining high resolution with the ability to print high cell densities and high viscous materials. Printed Multicellular 3D constructs for studying cell-cell interactions and skin tissue will be presented and challenges towards printed organs will be discussed.
