You will work in the field of robotics, from laboratory and functional models to demonstrators and prototypes for various applications. Your field of activity focuses on the development and implementation of automated control of image acquisition and the laser process and includes the areas of machine learning, acquisition and processing of data (image data, motion data) and system communication. Additionally, you will support the team with related tasks in terms of prototype setup and testing.
The Department of Industrial and Biomedical Optics at LZH research applications of laser and optical technologies in the field of biomedical engineering and food production in interdisciplinary projects. A section of our department is dedicated to the automated control and monitoring of laser processes for weed management, exemplified by laser-based weed treatment to foster sustainable herbicide alternatives. We employ machine learning techniques for weed identification. Our team's endeavors encompass the entire spectrum from design and development to constructing experimental prototypes and conducting real-world testing under environmental conditions.
Main tasks:
- Collaborate with our research team to develop and improve models for object detection of plants.
- Research existing object detection models and develop/adapt new models.
- Transfer evaluated models on hardware platforms for field testing.
- Assist in data collection, preparation, and annotation for AI model training.
- Implement and optimize algorithms and software tools for image analysis and computer vision.
- Support the team with any related tasks in terms of prototype setup and testing.

- Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of robotics and control systems as well as embedded systems.
- Experience with Python; C++ and Linux would be a plus.
- Communication in German or English.
