Laser welding of metal foam sandwiches

Within the framework of a joint research project, the LZH has developed a process for the laser welding of large-scale metal foam sandwiches.

Metal foams are highly porous, light materials, which, due to the cellular structure, dampen energy forms such as vibrations, shock or noise extremely well. This material is also temperature resistant and it can screen out electromagnetic waves. In so-called sandwich constructions, including combinations with aluminum and steel sheets, metal foams have a much higher bending stiffness than massive metal sheets, and due to their lighter weight, they are especially good for lightweight construction and for parts with a dynamically high load.

These large-sized metal foam sandwiches are, for example, of great interest for highly stressed parts in shipbuilding, such as rudder constructions, since they allow weight reductions of up to 20 per cent.
