Constructional and high-performance plastics, especially CFRP and GFRP, can be cut and drilled accurately with the laser, and in a reproducible process.


Using laser-based processes, the group “Composites”  can trim not only hardened, but also consolidated materials. Semi-finished products such as prepegs, preforms, dry mats and mats with binder and sandwich structures can be accurately and repetitively cut using laser radiation.

When drilling and perforating using laser material removal, holes with diameters far below 1 mm are possible.

As a preliminary step to recycling, laser cutting be also be used to produce staple fibers.

Further, the group offers analyses of cutting edges and drillings, and the qualification of basic mechanical characteristics of laser-processed components.

High-power disc as well as fiber lasers in conjunction with fast, high-precision stages and industrial robots are used.
