Laser-GMA hybrid welding of metals

The group “Joining and Cutting of Metals” carries out feasibility studies for hybrid welding processes. According to customer requirements, the scientists develop and optimize processes for joining thick sheets, for example for pipelines or liquid gas tanks.


Using laser-GMA hybrid welding, it is possible to join sheets with material thicknesses of over 20 mm in a single layer. For this process, laser radiation is combined with MIG/MAG arcs. Depending on the requirements, the process can also be combined with inductive pre- or post-heating.

The LZH has a 16 kW laser for these processes.

If necessary, the generated joints can be analyzed using metallographic methods. Light and SEM microscopes are available. Also, micro-hardness measurements and element analyses can be carried out. The mechanical properties of the welding joints can be examined using tensile, pressure and fatigue tests.
