Joining dissimilar materials

As a service, the LZH examines processes for welding dissimilar metals. Suitable processes are developed, optimized, and the generated joints are examined.


According to customer requirements, the LZH develops and optimizes processes for joining dissimilar metals. Pulsed or continuous wave lasers with an output power up to 16 kW can be used. Laser welding or soldering can be used to join, for example, steel and aluminum, aluminum and copper, and steel and copper.

If needed, the joints can be analyzed in the metallography lab. Both light and scanning electron microscopes are available for this purpose. Likewise, micro-hardness measurements and element analyses can be carried out. The mechanical characteristics of the seams can be measured using tensile, pressure and fatigue tests.
