Characterization of optical fibers

The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) measures the properties of optical fibers.

 

In order to characterize cylindrically symmetric, optical fused silica fibers, there are several measurement systems available at the LZH:

  • Photon Kinetics 2500 optical fiber analysis system (PK 2500)
  • Santec SDA-6000B optical fiber chromatic dispersion measurement system (SDA-6000 B)
  • Photon Kinetics S14 refractive index profiler (PK S14)

With these measurement systems, the following properties of the fibers can be determined:

  • Transmission depending on the wavelength from 800 to 1600 nm
  • Cut-off wavelength
  • Mode field diameter
  • Numerical aperture
  • Refraction index profile
  • Core diameter
  • Dispersion in the wavelength range between 1260 nm and 1600 nm
