Marking and writing on glass

With the laser, glass can be flexibly marked and structured. The transparency of the laser-marked area can be accurately pre-defined. Even pre-stressed glasses can be precisely marked with the laser.

 

During laser marking, the laser beam is redirected to the glass surface by a scanner mirror. The glass is locally vaporized, and thus a defined structure is generated. Depending on the distance between the observer and the structure created  by the laser, the glass appears to be partially transparent or opaque for the human eye. The closer the distances, the more the light is dispersed and the transparency decreases.

With this laser-based method, glass components can be precisely structured. This processing makes the glass surface rougher. This property is, for example, useful for medical packaging, because rubber attachments adhere better to glass receptacles with a rough surface.

Laser structuring can also be used to functionalize glasses. For example, special optics can be produced using surface structuring.
