Diode-pumped solid-state lasers and fiber lasers as well as amplifiers for applications in space and under harsh environmental conditions are the areas of expertise of the Solid-State Lasers Group. The Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer (MOMA) laser developed by the LZH scientists shall search the surface of the Mars for traces of life within the scope of the ExoMars 2020 mission.

Besides, another work priority is the development of highly stable laser systems for space-based gravitational wave detectors.

A new exciting challenge is the development of a laser for the deep sea: this laser shall explore the seafloor for mineral deposits at 4,000 to 6,000 m depth.
