Scientific employee (m/w/d)
Specialization in physics, optical technologies, laser technology or comparable (master's degree), focusing on ultrashort pulse lasers

The Ultrafast Photonics Group deals with generating and amplifying ultrashort laser pulses in the pico- and femtosecond range. With novel beam sources in the visible to the mid-infrared range, the group bridges the gap from fundamental research and development to application. In particular, thulium- and holmium-based beam sources with µJ pulse energies and pulse durations < 1 ps in the 2 µm wavelength range are suitable for micromaterial processing of polymers, e.g. for the fabrication of stents or catheters. This is where your work will start to overcome the limitations of existing laser systems with new techniques to achieve the required pulse properties. You will delve into existing technologies and evaluate them for further scalability. This will be done with simulations and the design of Strecker-Compressor arrays. You will transfer the designed laser systems into prototypes in the laboratory, characterize them and optimize them concerning their performance.

Focal points of your work are:

  • Design, construction, and characterization of novel ultrashort pulse fiber lasers and amplifiers
  • Exploring new technologies for scaling pulse properties in thulium- and holmium-based crystal amplifiers
  • Independent planning and execution of experiments with support of results with simulations in MatLab/Python environment
  • Communication with international project partners

The described activities include the opportunity to obtain a PhD.

Working in the research group at LZH offers you a unique environment and best conditions. We offer:

  • An interdisciplinary team consisting of natural scientists and engineers
  • Close collaboration with industry and research partners who will support you in developing your ideas
  • Targeted training to promote your individual strengths

Hiring requirements:

  • A degree (master's) with above-average academic performance in the field of physics, optical technologies, laser technology, or equivalent
  • Ideally, experience in the use of ultrashort pulse laser systems
  • Further (practical) experience in the fields of optics & photonics is an advantage
  • Good command of English
  • Structured, responsible, and goal-oriented working style
  • Pleasure to contribute independently and productively to the team

Temporary employment according to the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Temporary Scientific Contracts) and remuneration based on the collective agreement for the public service of the German states (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder, TV-L) depending on qualifications and activities up to TV-L ¾ E13. The candidate will be given the opportunity to obtain a PhD.

Severely disabled persons are preferred in case of equal suitability.

The LZH attaches great importance to professional gender equality.

Starting date: Immediately or by arrangement.
