The Laser is an all-round Tool for Industrial Automation and Manufacturing Processes

13.10.2011

The 5th HANNOVER MESSE Laser Autumn Forum in Hannover was characterized by high-quality lectures on laser applications in optical measurement technology and quality assurance, on automated manufacturing processes and on production efficiency. 40 experts and decision makers from industry, science and research met at the LZH Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. on October 6th, 2011, to discuss the topic “Lasers in Automation – Key Technologies for highly efficient Manufacturing Processes”.

Dr. Dietmar Kracht from the LZH presented glass processing using CO2 lasers. This process can be used for two applications: design applications, and for joining glass tubes for solar thermal collectors. High resolution measurement technology, presented by Dr. Stefan Scherer from Alicona Imaging GmbH, can be used to measure the complex, stochastical surface structure of rhinoceros skin. This structure can then be transferred via laser technology to the back shell of a cell phone, thus providing a special haptic feeling to high quality consumer products. Dr. Dirk Golla of Alltec GmbH, FOBA Laser Marking + Engraving, showed how personalized documents such as identity or money cards can be individually processed at a high speed, using a laser.

During the lectures and in the breaks, the participants could exchange their ideas on the concrete possibilities which laser technology offers. The real-to-life examples provided the participants with the possibility to discuss new ideas and applications, and many appointments to meet at a firm and discuss concrete challenges were made. At the end of the forum, the opportunity to tour the laboratories at the LZH was provided.

The theme “Lasers in Automation” will be continued at the IVAM product market in the exhibition area „MicroTechnology – Smart Systems for Automation“ in 2012. The 5th Laser Autumn Forum of the IVAM Microtechnology Network was organized and conducted with the support of the Deutsche Messe AG, the Laser Zentrum Hannover, the Fraunhofer-Institut für Lasertechnik ILT, the Ruhr University Bochum and the LIMO Lissotschenko Mikrooptik GmbH. The forum proceedings can be ordered from IVAM.
