Photovoltaics

Application examples from photovoltaics: crystalline, organic and thin-film solar cells

Work of the group focusses on:

  • Modification of optical and electrical characteristics of materials for solar cells and sensors using laser-induced modification, melting or ablation
  • Patterning (P1-P3) of organic thin-film solar cells and CI(G)S
  • Edge isolation of mc-Si solar cells using ultra-short pulse ablation

Current scientific work and projects:

  • GOAL 1 „New, innovative approaches for laser-based edge isolation with the goal of improving efficiency and reducing costs“ (BMU)
    • Goal: Use of picosecond laser sources for quick edge isolation of crystalline solar cells
  • PPP „Development of an industrial processing and production technology for polymer solar cells “ (BMBF)
    • Goal: Inexpensive production of polymer solar cells using a configurable roll-to-roll facility
  • LaserLining „Laser structuring process and alternative thin-film combination of CI(G)S solar modules“ (AiF)
    • Goal: Development of an efficient production process for serial monolithic circuit connection of CIGS solar modules
  • LIST „Large area light capture for silicon-based thin-film solar cell technology” – subproject: Laser-based thermal post-treatment of TCO materials for thin-film photovoltaics (BMU)
    • Goal: Deliberate material modification to improve the electrical and optical characteristics of laser-annealed TCO layers for use in a-Si-/µ-Si solar cells
