In the field of renewable energy, photovoltaic systems are an effective means to use sun light as a source for electrical energy. Here, the sunlight is absorbed by the surface of a solar cell and converted into electrical energy using a functional layer system, with the efficiency of the solar modules being the decisive factor.

In cooperation with leading partners from industry the LZH is carrying out research projects in order to further develop this technology. The overall aim is to increase the efficiency and reduce the production costs for solar systems.

Compared to conventional processes laser-based applications for photovoltaics offer many advantages and are very often  the key for cost-efficient production.

Overview of advantages:

  • Processing of thin wafers without mechanical contact
  • New, rapid and flexible processes
  • Key technology for novel cell concepts
  • High degree of automation
