The Nanomaterials and Nanophotonics Group works on generating nanoparticles and nanoparticle polymer composites by using pulsed laser ablation in liquids. In this way, nanoparticles can be produced from almost any material and with high purity. The main fields of application for laser-generated nanoparticles are medicine as well as energy and telecommunications technology.

Also, methods for the bioconjugation of nanoparticles for imaging processes (nanomarkers), or the directed delivery of substances (drug-delivery system) in biomedicine play an important role for the LZH researchers.

By investigating the fundamental processes during the generation of nanoparticles through laser-based ablation in liquids, and based on this, developing new approaches for this process, the group also covers the relevant fields of fundamental research.

Numerical and theoretical simulation of electromagnetic fields in nanostructured media, and the production and configuration of metallic and semiconductive nanoparticles for electrical and magnetic resonances, metamaterials and metasurfaces round off the profile of the Nanomaterials and Nanophotonics Group.
