Communications Group
The Communications Group is responsible for public relations and for initiating and carrying out strategic projects on the national and international level. It also offers internal services for the Board of Directors, Management and R&D departments. In 2009, the group focused on:
Marketing and public relations
At the Hannover Messe and Laser.World of Photonics exhibition 2009, the LZH again presented itself as a competent research and development partner. The scientific-technical focus was on laser welding on the macro and micro level, laser applications for photovoltaics and glass processing, laser-based generation of nanoparticles, the development of femtosecond laser systems, laser processing of fiber-reinforced composites and coatings for laser optics.
In addition, 28 press releases and the annual report were published, and the LZH homepage was re-launched with a fresh new design, layout and structure.
To better promote our R&D activities to the broad public, five video podcasts showcasing current projects of our R&D departments were produced and published.
Strategic projects
The Communications Group operates the office of the European Optical Society (EOS). Their main activities in 2009 were integrating three new member societies from Eastern Europe, organizing six scientific-technical events and supporting the secretariat of the Photonics21 European Technology Platform.
Business development
In cooperation with unitransfer and the Leibniz University of Hannover (LUH), and within the scope of the EU and BMWi funded startingbusiness project, the Communications Group supports spin-off companies from universities and other research institutes. From management course programs, consulting services for setting up business plans, to support in acquiring capital startingbusiness, this project supports high-tech start-up companies through the whole spin-off process.
With support from hannoverimpuls, 18 start-up company video clips were produced and published, and can be seen at www.startingbusiness.uni-hannover.de.
So far, startingbusiness has supported 21 company founder teams, and has acquired 1 Mio. Euro funding for the start-up companies.

Internal services
Internal services provided by the Communications Group are operating the LZH library and assisting researchers in literature research and publishing scientific manuscripts. In addition, the Communications Group is responsible for Customer Relations and Knowledge Management.
